1. 数字或数量：

We had a large number of participants.

2. 编号：

3. 歌曲或演出等节目：

That song is the opening number.

那首歌是开场曲。

4. 排数：

Take a seat in row number 3.

坐在第3排。

5. 数量（通常用于强调数量的不确定性）：

1.hot number，招人喜爱的东西

例：

I invented a new can opener that was a hot number in the stores.

2.by the numbers，严格遵循规则；一板一眼

例：

If we all focus and do this by the numbers, then we should have no trouble getting it finished.

3.have （got） sb's number，当你有了某人的号码，那你跟对方的关系肯定有一定程度上的提升，不过，have sb's number可不是说你跟某人关系好，它是更深层次的，即了解某人的底细、对某人知根知底。需要注意的是这个习语是非正式的。

例：

4.sb's number is up，劫数已到、死期已至（informal，同样是非正式的表达）

例：

Your number is up, then you can't escape!

如果你大限已至，那就是难逃！

5.a cushy number，形容一个人有轻松的工作，表示美差、令人羡慕的轻松状态

例：

He's got a really cushy number working at a holiday resort.

他那份在度假胜地的工作真是轻松。

注意用法：

the number of 表示“……的数量，……的数目”，作主语时谓语动词用单数；a number of 意为“许多，大量”，相当于a lot of，作主语时谓语动词用复数。

例：

The number of deaths this year is 28.

今年的死亡人数是28人。

A number of people have recently left the company.

最近有许多人离开了这家公司。

“number”和“numb”的区别：
