如果million ，hundred，thousand等词前面有one，two，three等数词修饰时，表示的是具体的数字，则不加s；相反，如果hundred，thousand，million等词前面没有数词修饰，表示的是一个不确定的数字，则一方面要加s，另一方面后面要跟of。试比较：

为什么“千”是thousand，却要用“k”来表示？

单词thousand的意思是“一千”，那为什么表示“千”的简写用的是k，不是t呢？

这个故事要从希腊语中的“chilioi”或“khilioi”说起。

希腊语中这两个词的意思很宽泛（broad），其中就有“一千；……千”的意思。在一群法国科学家受委托（commission）制作公制（metric）单位时，他们将希腊单词“chilioi”缩短为“kilo”，而后“k”就成为了“千”的简写。

很快，世界各地的人们都开始使用k作为千的缩写（abbreviation）形式。另外，“百万”的英文缩写是m，这来源于million的首字母m。而在中国常用的万的缩写w，其实并不是国际通用的缩写方式。
